Media Update | Feb. 2026
The Athletic:
"Too many clubs, large- and small-market alike, take a defeatist approach, preferring to lament, “baseball is broken,” rather than figure out how to prove it isn’t. No one can dispute that vast revenue differences exist in the sport, even between the Dodgers and other large-market teams. Those differences can be addressed in ways other than a cap. And if the owners try to force one upon the players’ union, it might shut down the industry for a full season at a time when the game is in the midst of a renaissance. Doesn’t seem like a great idea."
USA Today:
“For now, they [The Mets and Dodgers] are the game’s pariahs, their proverbial hands slapped for trying too hard. The industrywide price, in management’s eyes, should be a salary cap.
A greater solution: A little more competence and a little more care from those who have displayed precious little of either.”
Fansided:
“Until baseball has a salary cap in place, it will be all small-market owners use to justify their lack of spending – and thus competition – against the Dodgers, Mets and Yankees of the world.
These same owners have been calling for a cap for nearly a decade. Each and every year, as inflation in the sports world skyrockets, so to does the net worth of every MLB owner and their franchises. Yet, only some of those owners use most of that increased revenue on improving the roster itself."
